How to Improve Your Computer Speed

Slow PC

In this modern era of technology, everything is so fast that a little delay in your work can leave you behind. Today your PC (Desktop) plays an important role in your daily work so you want 110% from your computer. But sometimes, your computer could not perform up to task and it seems to be the most annoying moment for you. So this is the time to give your PC a tune-up.

Just like human beings, when we spend hours in hard work, we need some meal to regain our energy. Also we need daily bath to protect our body from germs and bacteria. Similarly after hours of hours of work, our computer becomes slow and full of junk. So in this case you have to tune-up your PC on regular basis. Here I'll give you some tips about "How can you speed up your computer performance?", so follow these tips and hopefully you'll notice a boost in your computer speed.

Start-up

Windows Startup
The first thing you want from your PC is quick boot (start-up). Boot time decides how fast is your PC. Sometimes unnecessary files and hardware can cause slow start-up of Operating System. So the question is How to Fix the Slow Start-up??? So first of all tweak your BIOS:

Tweak Your BIOS

BIOS
  • Restart your PC.
  • Enter the BIOS setting by pressing DEL key (F2 or F10 in case of some other motherboards)
  • Select "HDD" as first boot device so that it will not look for CD's or other removeable storage devices during start-up. This will decrease your PC's boot time. However if you want to install operating system using bootable CD/DVD then you can change the boot order following the same process.

Remove Unnecessary Files to Run at Start-up

msconfigSecondly, you might have installed some unnecessary files and software. Some of them run in the background which cause a delay in the start-up time. Removing these files or manage them to not run at start-up can speed it up. If you don't want to uninstall these files then you can stop them to start automatically & run in background. To do this follow these steps:

  • Open start menu & click Run.
  • Type "msconfig" in the box.
  • A window will appear, choose the tab "Startup"
  • Now uncheck unnecessary files.
  • Click OK and restart your computer.

Give Your Computer a Static IP

When you start your computer, it spends a significant amount of time asking the network for an IP address. You can get rid of this process by providing your computer a static IP address which never changes. To assign static IP:

Static IP
  • Open Control Panel
  • Now open "Network and Sharing Center"
  • Click on Local Area Connection > Properties > Internet Protocol Version 4 > Properties
  • Give it the IP address here
  • Done

Install a Solid State Drive

SSDIf you have some extra cash then installing a Solid State Drive (SSD) will definitely help you in boosting your computer speed and boot time. Solid State Drive will increase your boot (start-up) speed upto 3 times than a HDD. Though they are much expensive than HDD's but due to their fast data transfer rate, they provide your computer a boost. Also they have non-moveable parts so they are less susceptible to crash. Compared with electromechanical disks, SSD's are typically less susceptible to physical shock, run more quietly, have lower access time, and less latency.

Defragment Hard Disk Drive

Defragmentation

Defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation. It takes a long time according to the percentage of fragmentation. The program which is used for defragmentation is called Disk Defragmenter. As a result of defragmentation, hard disk take less time to open a program or file. In short, defragmentation reduces the seek time of HDD and hence, the performance of the computer increases. To defragment HDD, follow these steps:
  • Open Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
  • Analyze every partition & defragment the fragmented partitions.
  • After defragmentation, restart your computer (though it is not necessary but it is better to do so)
Some best disk defragmenting programs are: Auslogics Disk Defrag, MyDefrag, PerfectDisk, Diskeeper, Defraggler & IObit Smart Defrag.

 Update Your Antivirus Program

Update Antivirus

Regularly updating your antivirus program will keep viruses & spywares away from your computer and hence your computer will perform upto the task. Some best antivirus programs are Bitdefender, AVG, Norton, Avast & ESET NOD32. I prefer AVG because it has great features and its interface is user friendly.

Upgrade Your RAM

Upgrade RAM

The best way to get rid of slow performance is upgrading your RAM. It will definitely increase your computer's speed. RAM is pretty cheap these days and anyone can afford them easily. Also its installation is very easy and anyone can do this without any experience.

Clean Your PC

Clean PC

Just like junk files, cookies etc. dust & dirt can also decrease your computer performance. A dirty computer can quickly becomes overheat and hence not performs upto the task so cleaning your computer after sometime will definitely increase its life and you will notice performance boost.

I hope these tips will help you in solving slow PC problems. If you have some other tips then share with us by dropping your comments. It will be great for me if you give your feedback.
