Apple to Launch its Operating System in the Cars
Apple Inc. is all set to launch its in-car Operating System from the next week. Apple top-line said on March 1 that it is bringing its new OS to automobiles this year with a new CarPlay system that links its iPhone with the vehicle’s in-dash display to allow drivers to access the phone’s maps, music, calls and messages.
The Financial Times is reporting that the company plans to introduce the new feature next week with 3 major launch partners: Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.
CarPlay, which will require an update to its current iOS 7 operating
system and would only work with iPhone 5S, 5C, and 5, can be activated
using a push-and-hold button on the steering wheel, Apple said. CarPlay
takes advantage of Siri, the iPhone’s voice-activated digital assistant,
which will respond to requests through voice commands, by reading
drivers’ messages aloud and letting them dictate a reply or make a call.
Here is the Financial Times Report:
First the mobile phone, now the car. Having revolutionized personal communication, Apple now wants to change the way we drive. The technology group will next week launch its first in-car operating system with Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo as it attempts to take the lead in a fierce race to dominate tomorrow’s smart cars. [...]
The deal marks the first time that Apple is embedding its software in devices other than its own branded products. The choice of the Ferrari, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz is seen to be in keeping with the US tech group’s high-end phones.”
The official announcement of Apple’s deal will be made at the coming week’s Geneva Motor Show, the FT reported on its website late Friday, citing unnamed sources. A number of other manufacturers are expected to incorporate it into models this year, the FT reported.
Apple said the main purpose of introducing iOS in the cars is to make sure drivers aren't distracted.
The addition of iOS in the Car is a big step for Apple, which only recently added Siri integration to a handful of General Motors models. Rival software company Microsoft has teamed up with several other automakers, including Ford, to create its own infotainment system with navigation, apps and other capabilities.
